Discuss from these verses in Scripture:
1 Thessalonians 5:11-15:
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
Questions and thoughts to prompt group discussion:
Is there a difference between compliments and encouragement? What are the differences? Does one imply a deeper friendship? Note: While compliments are very important and are often encouraging, we should strive to get to know our Christian brothers and sisters on a deeper level. It is the difference between being friendly and being a friend.
In the video, how did you see the compliments lead to real encouragement?
Talk about how our simple words can be one of the most powerful things we have to encourage and help others.
Talk about the verse above. Focus on the verbs. Talk about "comfort" which is a different word in the Greek than the word "comfort" later in the passage. The first word means to call one another toward encouragement, to literally say to each other, "be of good courage." Talk about edify, What does it mean to "know" those who work around us and esteem them highly in love? Can one of the ways we do that be through compliments and encouragement?
Ask them what other verbs they see. Warn, comfort (this time the word means literally to console, to relate to and help lift the spirit of those who are faint-hearted (feeble minded) and then also, the word support.
Talk about ways you can implement these instructions from Scripture in your school or church.
Project:
Give every person 3 thank-you cards with envelopes. (you can buy in bulk at Wal-mart) and ask them to write a thank- you / compliment / encouragement to someone who has worked among them.
Project:
Have an "Operation Engage Encouragement" Week. Ask students to give 3 specific compliments each day for that week. Ask them to take note of times when the compliments turned into opportunities for deeper encouragement. Ask them to write down 3 people they plan to encourage that week on a deeper level. Tell them to take note of how they did it, how it felt etc. Discuss the outcomes the following week.
